BLACK WOMAN AS MUSE (MUSE) is the kind of book that comes along only a few times in a generation. It is a landmark work that will become a treasured heirloom that daughters will share with daughters, over generations. MUSE dramatically states a simple message: beauty comes in many forms and colors. This book, which is based upon traveling exhibition of the same name by photographer Jerry Taliaferro, is an amazing collection of images from what he describes as his multi-decade " journey to seeing " the physical and spiritual beauty that has always surrounded him. MUSE is a long overdue homage to the beauty of Black women who inhabit the day-to-day lives of most Americans. The subjects are Black women of all ages and backgrounds from many parts of the African American diaspora. They our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and coworkers. Rarely has the American woman of African descent been so gloriously presented. Each meticulously crafted black and white image was created to elevate the woman and to declare her dignity and humanity. Equally important, MUSE boldly and unapologetically explores the wonderfully diverse beauty of the Black American Woman, a part of the American experience not often mentioned. The breathe-taking photographic treatment which echoes the high glamour images of old Hollywood invites comparison to some of the great icons of beauty.
This book is an event and every turn of the page is an emotional experience.
